With summer comes hotter weather. Cooling off at the beach, pool, or lake are often common destinations for families to relax. Swimming and playing in the water are not only a great way to stay cool, but also give your entire body a workout. Sometimes, it is a harder workout than on land due to the resistive forces of the water and the need to hold your breath. However, it can also be very relaxing and soothing allowing more freedom to move your body and float in the water reducing weight bearing. Here are a few water-based activities that will challenge your strength, balance, and coordination.
Swimming: Swimming is a necessary skill that everyone should know how to perform. It can save your life! Although sometimes scary at first, swimming will help strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular endurance, and increase social skills. Check out our post on the therapeutic benefits of swimming.
Boogie Boarding: Heading to the beach? Grab your boogie board and your sunscreen. You will have to work hard to keep your balance against the waves.
Paddle Boarding: This activity will challenge your balance and coordination. You can sit down, kneel, or stand up.
Surfing: Definitely looks easier than it is! You will get a full body workout just paddling out. Motor planning to catch a wave and coordination and balance to stand up will all be working to hang ten!
