When your little one can stand it is so exciting! But what do you do when they don’t know how to get back down? There are a few ways you can help them learn!
First, know that plopping back onto their bottom is ok. It is how they start to learn how to develop the control needed to do it without the plop! Their body is getting the feedback from their joints and muscles and making adjustments.
If your little one doesn’t bend, then you may want to teach them how to bend at the hips. You can practice this by getting right behind them and helping them to sit back onto your lap. Or you can use a stool. The higher the surface the easier it will be for them in the beginning. You are basically teaching them how to ‘unlock’ their joints and develop eccentric control!
You can also work on having them try to reach for toys on the ground or on a stool so that they learn how to get all the way down to the ground. We have this old post on squatting that gives some ideas!
